Start with the seated view
Sit where you actually read, with your usual pillows in place. The shade should hide the bright bulb from your eyes while letting light reach the page. Try the lamp on both sides before committing to a table or wall fitting. A beautiful lamp that shines straight into your face is still in the wrong place.
Separate brightness from colour
Lumens describe light output; Kelvin describes the colour of white light. A warm-looking lamp can still be too bright. Look for an adjustable output if the same fitting must serve reading and winding down. Check that the bulb fits the socket and that its dimming method is compatible with the lamp.
Make the last action simple
Try switching the lamp off while lying down. A reachable physical switch is useful even with app or voice control. If two people share the room, individual lights and separate controls make more sense than one bright source between them. Before buying smart bulbs, check what happens after the wall switch has been turned off.
