Name the job
Decide whether the cable is for charging a phone, transferring files, connecting a display or powering a laptop through a dock. Check the requirements of both connected devices. A charging-only cable is not a substitute for a cable carrying the video mode your display needs.
Read the stated capabilities
Look for explicit supported power and data specifications from a reputable supplier. The charger, cable and device all influence the result. Do not infer capability from cable thickness, colour or a vague “fast” label. Keep the packaging details where they can be checked later.
Test the actual combination
Try the intended task before routing the cable behind furniture. If charging works but the display does not, review the required video support at every point in the chain. Stop using damaged connectors or cables that behave abnormally; do not keep bending them until a connection appears.
