Count the connections

List the devices you want to wire and reserve one switch port for the connection back to the router. Leave a little expansion room without buying an unnecessarily large unit. Match the port speeds to the devices and the upstream connection.

Keep the first setup simple

For a straightforward home network, an unmanaged switch may be sufficient. Features such as VLANs or power over Ethernet need deliberate compatibility and configuration checks. Never assume a normal Ethernet port can power a camera or access point.

Connect and verify

Follow the device instructions, connect the router once and add devices one by one. Avoid connecting the same two switches with multiple cables unless the equipment is explicitly configured for it; loops can disrupt a network. Label the upstream lead and keep the case ventilated.
